Go to Window and check Color. It may’ve been close out by accident. You can arrange your palettes by clicking down on the name and dragging it to combine it with other frequently used palettes or docking them to the Palette Well in the upper right hand corner of Photoshop. To use the Palette Well you need to have your screen resolution set to greater than 800 x600.

How to dock to the Palette Well:

Peadge, there used to be a special pad where you could mix colors, ie in previous versions. I guess it has been discontinued. Am I missing how to find it. I think it doesn’t exist anymore.

Do you mean mixing channels?

Choose Image > Adjustments > Channel Mixer

Or are you "remembering" a feature from Freehand?

There used to be a little square next to the swatches where you could mix the colors and use the tools like paint brush and bucket to mix a new color. Then you could add it to the palette.

I seem to remember that "mixing" feature in Macromedia’s Freehand. I no longer use Freehand though and have uninstalled it from my computer. I’ve been playing with Photoshop since version 5 and can’t remember if that was a feature then or not? The color palette allows you select colors from the "rainbow" with the eyedropper tool and fine tune by adjusting the sliders. Desired colors can be added tothe swatch palette in this manner (from Photoshop Help):
To add a color to the Swatches palette:

Do one of the following:

a.. Make the color you want to add the foreground color, and click the New Swatch button in the Swatches palette. Alternately, choose New Swatch from the Swatches palette menu.
b.. (Photoshop) Make the color you want to add the foreground color. Position the pointer over an empty space in the bottom row of the Swatches palette (the pointer turns into the paint bucket tool), and click to add the color. Enter a name for the new color and click OK.
c.. (ImageReady) Drag the foreground color selection box or the background color selection box from the toolbox to the Swatches palette.
d.. (ImageReady) Drag a swatch from the Color Table palette to the
Swatches palette.
Note: New colors are saved in the Preferences file so that they persist between editing sessions. To permanently save a color, save it in a library. " color.
