How do I optimize PS preferences/performance?

When I perform an extended function on a 1mb image (standard quality for the images from my Olympus C5050 digital camera), such as when I hold down the left mouse button for paint tools, lasso tools, etc, my screen goes white and I have to stop the action. I know the problem is related to system resources, so I’m asking for help optimizing my settings. My computer is:

AMD Athlon XP cpu at 2.3ghz
ATI Radeon 9800Pro, 128mb RAM
1gb PC3500 DDR RAM (2x512mb)
40gb Seagate HDD, 7200rpm
Abit NF7 motherboard
Windows XP SP1
PS 7.0

In general my computer is clean, with minimal apps running in the background or open apps in the foreground [while using PS]. I’ve got my history states set to 10, and I’m allowing 100% usage of my RAM. I’m using PS 6 on a lesser machine, and I have not encountered the problem.

All suggestions welcomed and appreciated.

Thank you,

jakesnake

You need lots more memory 128MB is the bare minimum for XP. 512MB would be more useful.
Set PS to use 50% of the available memory. You know, the operating systems needs RAM also.

If I’m not mistaken, Jakesnake has a Gigabyte of RAM. It’s just his Video Card that has the 128 MB, right Jakesnake?

I agree that 50% of RAM for Photoshop would be better than 100%, leaving an equal amount for the OS. I would try saving more often and perhaps even purging history states or "all" every so often. I would also recommend getting some Spyware program to check for intrusion as "John Rampling" suggested in another similar post in the alt.graphics.photoshop NG.

Oops – my mistake. I misread his post. But, it is an extremely bad idea to allow PS 100% of the RAM.

I backed my allotment of RAM to 50%, and it seems to be better. I had been running at 80%, not 100% as I originally mis-stated. Perhaps I was giving so much RAM to PS that Windows was having trouble with the available memory. I’ll keep an eye on it. Also, what is a good number for Cache Levels?

Thank you for your input.

Also defrag the HD’s. That will help.

William,
Why do you open up new threads ie. re:How, re:Pinting, re, Computer, etc… can’t you just "Reply to group" on the original one? The wau you do it makes it next to impossible to follow ;-(

Marcel
