I am experimenting in PS 7.0 with creating various picture frames around my digital pictures. The way I’m exploring now is by using the marquee selection tools, adjusting the stroke of the selection, then playing with the various level attributes such as shadows, bevel/emboss, satin, etc. My dilemma is that I want to then use the resulting frame as a selection tool itself, so that I can then go grab the portion of any image. In other words, I want to build the frame first, then go "try it out" on various pictures. When the fit looks good, I want the image in question to be cropped precisely to fit the frame. Please advise as to the best ways to accomplish this.

Thank you,

Create your frame on a transparent layer, load any new images onto a new layer, ensure it’s below the frame layer then size or crop as required.

I’ve had good results by first adjusting the canvas size of the image I want to frame. Make sure your layer doesn’t say "background" on by double-clicking on the layer. Then increase the canvas size a tin bit and them use the magic want tool to select the new "empty area. Create a new layer and fill this layer with the color of your choice. Add texture, bevel it, add drop shadow etc. The repeat the process but this time expanding he canvas size by even a smaller amount. Select the new area, add a new layer and fill with a solid color, black maybe. Repeat this process once more, but a little larger this time. Create a new layer, fill add texture, bevel etc. These three layers now make up a frame. Your image will be placed in the layer beneath all of them.

Here’s one I did in a similar way on a photo of Emmy Lou Harris:
