How can I tell the ppi of my CRT monitor?

I have a Hitachi 19" CRT monitor model CM752. It has 0.21mm pixel triad pitch. It is set to 1024 x 768. I assume that it is 96ppi but 1024 x768 images created in Photoshop 7 are only covering 75% of the screen.

How can I know the monitor diplayed ppi?

Is there any other reason why the image should not fill the screen?

What are you really asking about?
In PS you can infinitely adjust the amount of space the image takes up on your monitor and that has nothing to do with the actual size of the image. Are you trying to create wallpaper for a Windows desktop to use on your 1024 by 768 desktop?

Well, measure the ACTUAL size of the displayed area and divide it by the number of pixels yours displaying? Pixels per inch… it’s not some arbitrary number, you can measure it 🙂

I want that when I or others open an image it will open covering the full screen area of a monitor set up to run 1024 x 768.

Perhaps the problem I perceive is caused by the image viewer reducing the size? I have viewed in Photoshop 7, Irfanview and MS Picture viewer all with the same results.

Spacegirl,

My 1024 x 768 x 96ppi image measures 11.5" so this is 89ppi. I have windows XP desktop set up to scan to screen edges.

My screen is approx 14.5" across so 1024/14.5 = 70ppi so I guess my monitor is only 72ppi not 96ppi "as most modern displays are" which I have read. Only confusing thing is that when I save the same image as a 1024 x 768 x 96ppi BMP image and select "centre" in XP display background the image fits exactly but perhaps even although "center" is selected XP is expanding the image to fit
