Where is a good place to get PhotoShop? Being retired and on a fixed budget I can’t afford the retail prices I’ve seen so far. Is there an OEM deal out there? I’m getting a new computer for Christmas and will need Office, Macromedia and PhotoShop and even on PriceGrabber that adds up to over $500.

TIA,

I dont think there are any OEM deals for PhotoShop. Dont be tempted by any of these "get PhotoShop for $60!" emails either… the chances are your money would vanish and nothing would turn up (and if it did, it would be pirated).

PhotoShop is $649, with the Creative Suite (PhotoShop, Illustrator, Acrobat, Indesign) around $1200.

Macromedia Studio starts at about $900.

Microsoft Office starts at about $200 an upwards depending what combination of software in the suite you want.

These are all professional programs and not really designed for the hobbiest… here are plenty of cheaper (if not free) alternatives which would do everything a casual home user would ever need.

Try Photoshop Elements if you are just doing home photo editing it will be plenty of power and the cost is only about 80.00.

Are you a student or teacher, or know somebody who is? The ‘educational’ version of Photoshop can be bought as a very deep discounts. It is the full version, just licensed for educators. I think it costs about 1/2 the price.

before you spend $ on MS Office you may want to check out Open Office. it’s free and offers good support for MS Office.

OpenOffice – aka SunOffice in the "full-fledged" version: http://www.openoffice.org/

I switched a couple of years ago (it was called SunOffice then), and it does *everything* I’ve needed to do. Plus … it’s immune to all of the Word and Excel-related viruses!

Also you might check out the open source PhotoShop equivalent: The GIMP: http://www.gimp.org/
It may do everything you think you need PhotoShop for.

Elements comes with some scanners but I am not up to date on what version or what scanner.
For less than $100, Elements 3 is a great deal and it comes with a manual.
