Magic Wand tool. First, make sure you’re in RGB color mode and not Index, as this may be a GIF (Image > Mode >RGB). Next, make sure your layer isn’t locked and named "background" (Window > Layers). If it is locked (has tiny lock icon to the right) and named "background," just double click on it to "make a layer." Then use your Magic Wand Tool with "contiguous" unchecked to select the white. Press delete. You should now have just the black with a transparent background.

However, you may have a few non-black pixel stragglers that need to be dealt with. To see, add a new layer by clicking on the New Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers Palette and drag this new layer down below the original one. Filling it with black will allow you to see these stray pixels. be sure you fill the empty layer and not the original. If you do see some non-black pixels, see if Threshold can get rid of them (Image > Adjust > Threshold) . Slide the slider way to the right (I think) to make them darker.

Then delete the black background layer by dragging to the garbage can icon at the bottom of the Layers Palette and save your image (File > Save for Web) as a GIF or PNG, two file types that support transparency and are PowerPoint friendly.
