The important question is what does Adobe say?

Adobe says upgrade to Photoshop 7 or earlier. They don’t say how much earlier.
If you have questions call the sales department at Adobe. Keep in mind that Photoshop CS only runs on Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 or Windows XP. Your Photoshop 4 must be resident in one of those operating systems before you can install the upgrade.

He can’t use his installation disk as a proof of ownership? Or a Photoshop serial #. I’m pretty sure PS4 doesn’t run on XP.

Unfortunately, Adobe has decided to essentially drop support for those of us not running Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 or higher or Windows XP or XP Pro. I am basically in the same situation as the poster.

Early in January I called Adobe to purchase an upgrade from Photoshop 5 to Photoshop 7. I have two legally registered versions of Photoshop. Photoshop 3 for Unix and Photoshop 5 for Windows 98SE. I was advised to upgrade to Photoshop CS because it was much more powerful than Photoshop 7. I purchased the Upgrade for $169.00. Adobe said that it would be a week to 10 days for receipt. In the meantime, I downloaded
the "Try It" version of Photoshop CS. It instantly told me during the installation
that I did not have the correct OS. Within 45 minutes I called Adobe back to cancel the purchase and was told, "Sorry, too late, order already filled."
They said my only recourse was to await the arrival of the package and return it for credit. They wanted me to pay the shipping charges back, even though it was their mistake knowing I was running Windows 98SE. They finally agreed it was their mistake and would cover the return charges. A week later, the package arrived and I returned the package the same day. It was received the following day. After a week I inquired as to the status of package and was informed they had no way of checking with the receiving department. I asked for a manager and he checked with DHL to verify that they had delivered the package to the shipping department.

The manager also said he would expedite the credit to my account and would keep me informed otherwise it would take two billing cycles (2 months).

In the meantime, I purchased a "Buy it Now" version of Photoshop 7 for $50 from Ebay. Sent the seller a money order and awaited the arrival of the CD. I had asked the seller if this was a legal copy and was assured it was. After a week I received an email passed through Ebay that he was not honoring the sale and would be returning the Money Order. Something about not being authorized to sell it because he also bought it off of Ebay and was reselling it. I’ll be monitoring Ebay to make sure this seller does not try to sell another copy of Photoshop 7. So anyone reading this…I’m in the market
for a legal version of Photoshop 7 for Windows, upgrade or full.

My only other alternative, aside from buying another computer is to add a hard drive and install Windows XP and then install Photoshop CS. I cannot upgrade my current system because I am running software that will not run in XP. So, my $169 upgrade will now cost me considerably more. As much as I would like to continue to use Photoshop, it’s time to check out the competition.

For whatever reason, Adobe has made a company decision to ignore those of us running older versions of Windows. I have called every Adobe reseller in the area to try to find a copy of Photoshop 7 without success. I guess it’s time to find a company who is more in tune with the needs of their users. Surely, Adobe has some unsold versions of Photoshop 7 around.

Regards…Bob

Speaking from personal experience, The Photoshop CS upgrade won’t recognize version 4. Secondly, the upgrade does NOT require the previous version to be installed. It will verify the CD or serial from the two versions prior. Upgrading from version 4 will require calling Adobe customer service for "unlocking" of the upgrade.

Here’s a link to a better software source for photoshop 7, Amazon.com. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000063EMG/qid =1108233705/sr= 8-4/ref=pd_bbs_4/104-9962670-0751122?v=glance&s=software &n=507846

Or search for photoshop 7 on Amazon’s site.

Most software manufacturers offload their backstock of prior versions on the discount distributors when they have enough stock of the current version.

I thought I could call Adobe but I wasn’t sure. I’m assuming it’s not a big deal to call them. BTW Photoshop 4 does run on Win xp. Thanks blah

Does it work if you set the compatibility mode back to Win 98 or 95? It should.

Macromedia’s Firewire has served me well and isn’t as expensive. I’m still using version 4. Freeware for both Windows and Linux – try the GIMP.
