Friend of mine is hacing troubles opening Photoshop 7.0.1 Its giving him an error, telling him there is not enough ram.
The system has 1Gb of RAM, and he says there is just under 1Gb free available.

Any Ideas? Or is this a common issue?

Thanks

"Page File" (aka "Virtual RAM", "Virtual Memory" or "Swap File") and
"Scratch Disk" used in Adobe products like PhotoShop are 2 separate items.

1/. Page File used for swapping data/applications in and out of physical memory to a swap file on the hard disk. It is used by the MS Windows Operating System. It is often referred to as virtual memory. It is usually calculated to be around twice the size of physical ram on the system. The page file can occupy any partition, and will be found in that partitions root folder/directory.

BTW… If you upgrade and install more/additional RAM you should always check and increase the page file or virtual ram allocation to a suitable size to allow the operating systems and programs to operate happily without complaining. Excessively large page files can slow the PC performance.

2./ Scratch Disk is an additional area set on one or more disks, may be set to occupy any specified partition or folder on the local PC system.

This area is specifically to allow the ADOBE product to take up and swap without interacting with or blowing out the operating systems page file / Virtual Memory size or from consuming all the PC systems resources and memory. Hopefully allowing other working programs to operate concurrently with the Adobe Product and also ensuring that those other programs do not grab up the resources that the Adobe product requires to allow it to operate properly.

The program has already been installed, So i doubt it

Maybe PS requires a certain amount of diskspace for virtual memory to use instead of RAM and there isn’t enough diskspace left .

I think you might be right there, Because i just did a search on yahoo, And thats what people have being saying in respsonse to the problem, To try increasing the size of the page file, So ive just suggest that and waiting to see what happens

Be sure to check the Photoshop Preferences and add extra drives or partitions for the Photoshop swap file, and check your level of Undos. Undos take up space. Lots of Levels also require extra memory. Check all this plus the info in the other response (below) to your post.

Two things that can be checked are if the memory was fragmented at the time of trying to run it and/or whether PS requires a large and unfragmented pagefile. Worth expanding the pagefile to check it out and then after that defragmenting and trying again.

with it disabled. A machine with 1GB ram should never need pagefile under normal operation. Though photoshop is the application of choice for filling memmory 😉

Not true. Some applications demand a pagefile.

Please read my lips. It doesn’t matter how much memory your system has YOU HAVE TO HAVE A PAGEFILE. Photoshop will always use hard drive space for somethings. Turning the scratch disk off in Photoshop is a guaranteed way of having problems.

Adobe has stated this I don’t know how many times on their user’s forums.

Hi. I just saw part of this thread.

In my Plug Ins and Scratch Disks preferences, the first disk is "Start Up". The second, third and fourth are "none".

How should I change this to optimize PS.7 on my Mac Running OS-S?

Thanks!

I have 1.5G of ram and I have a 2G HD partition that I only use for my pagefile. I’ve never had any problems with PS7.

Well, according to what Adobe personal have said on their boards you should not have your scratch disk and the disk that Photoshop is on on the same drive. If this isn’t possible then a different partition on the same drive is better than the same partition. Also, don’t set the amount of memory for Photoshop to use above 75%. Remember you have to have memory for Windows to use and for other programs if you run more than one at a time. I leave this set to 50% since I do run several programs at once.

All of this is not to say that more memory isn’t better. Photoshop will use up to 2GB. But, there are still something’s that it uses the scratch disk for no matter how much memory you have.
