You can achieve the same effect in channels by creating an alpha channel and then painting the "transflective" effect in with a 50% neutral grey brush…If you need more transparency use lighter shades of grey if you need less transparency use darker shades of grey.

In the channels palette you should see an alpha channel comprised of whites, blacks and greys in the semi-transparent areas.

Look in your channels palette, and see if there are other channels than the composite, RGB or CYMK ones…

CTRL+click on one of the other channels (convert your background as a layer by double-clicking it, if it is not already the case), then click on the layer mask button of the layers palette to load the transparency…
