HI,

Im a regular guy, I dont have a diploma in computer graphics or whatever and I would really appreciate a simple answer to a simple problem.

You see what I would like to do is this… take a picture of a hat and place the hat on top of a friends head in the photo.

The hat is on a plain white background, but I cant seem to make the background "invisible" so that I can just add the hat to the picture.

I’ve tried different things, looked at the FAQ and forums for an answer but honestly I dont understand most of it, and Im not sure what the technical terminology of what I want to do is.

I would like to place this pic on my personal website so it would have to be a .jpg or .gif if possible.

Im using photoshop CS, on winXP with 256mb DDR-RAM and 1 gig cpu, 40 gig HD with 38 gigs available.

If anybody could please help me out i’d appreciate it greatly.

Thanx,
Max

Copy this image to the image of your friend (just drag it over).

You may need to scale it.

Use the magic wand tool on the white part of the hat layer to select it. Hit delete.

That is all there is to it.

256 MB of RAM is really cutting it close. You need to give that baby another 512 MB, minimum.

Use the magic wand tool on the white part of the hat layer to select it. Hit delete.
And then if the hat looks a bit ragged, with the hat layer selected, go to Layer>Matting>Defringe.
This will get rid of any remnants of white that may be left. Cheers,
Gene Stevo.

You select out the background with the magic wand, or select the hat. The magic wand has a "tolerance" level, which you can see in a bar near the top of the page when you have that tool selected. Run your mouse over the tools at the left side, and the magic wand is near the top, on the right side of the bar.
Select a part of the hat, with the "tolerance" at 32 or so. Hold down the shift key, and continue to select parts of the hat until it is all selected. If no part of the hat is very similarly colored to the background, this will work. Once the hat is all selected, click "edit" and then "copy". Then you have copied only the hat. You’ll need to have the picture of your friend open in another pane in Photoshop. Make that window the active one by clicking anywhere in the picture, and click "edit" and then "paste". It will past only the hat in. Then you use the arrow tool to move it where you want to.
