Not enough memory (RAM)

I’ve asked a couple questions in here in the past with little luck, so if I’m in the wrong place or there’s some other information needed somebody let me know……

Using CS on a 3.4 GHz machine with 2Gig of memory. My scratch disks starst with a disk that has 40+ gig of free space as does my second scratch disk….

An STILL I constantly get the message that "Could not complete your request because there is not enough memory(RAM)"

For example, trying to merge 5 images it couldn’t do the job. Just this morning attempting to open 4 raw files into the converter I got this message. NOTHING else is open in Photoshop and there’s very little else going on on the machine. Task manager SAYS I’ve got about 1.6 Gig of memory available right now.

And YES, I’ve read the article from Adobe about memory. And I’ve set the usable memory to everything from 50% to 80% in 5% increments, restarting Photoshop between settings. Eventually I always get this same message crap.

So, what do I do to get RID of this and actually make this pig usable?

The only way I’ve been able to get around this is to physically pull 1Gig of RAM out of the machine when I want to do a big stitch (I’m using PanoTools – Photomerge may be easier but it is not all that good). Not a great fix, but in the absence of any suggestions from the powers that be, it’s what I’m stuck with.

This 2GB thing has been discussed many times in this forum – do a search on "2GB RAM" to pick up the threads. There’s no official explanation, but as near as I can gather it is an OS thing as much as anything – and it does not affect Macs.

To see the effect at its magical best, apply the Filter>Distort>Diffuse Glow filter to a 230MB RGB image with PS RAM allocation at anything over around 55%. The filter will fail to execute with a "not enough storage" dialog. (On my machine this happens with RAM set at anything over 50%.)

Then pull 1GB RAM out of the machine, set PS RAM allocation at 80% or over and the filter will execute. (On 2GB+ Macs the filter executes at virtually any RAM allocation.)

To see the threads where this was experimented with, go to:

I ran into the same problem with my 2gb/ram pc. I moved the slider for amount of RAM to be used in PS to 40% and it worked.
