Batch command and image orientation

Hi everyone,
I’ve a quick question which I should be able to answer for myself, but, I don’t know enough about the program, I am learning though.

If I use a batch command to resize the width of an image to 1000 pixels and have "constrained proportions" enabled I will get consistent landscape images of lets say 1000 x 667 pixels. But, if an image is in portrait orientation then my image will be 1000 x 1500 pixels. Is there any way in which a Photoshop batch command or droplet can determine the orientation of an image and apply the resize dimension to the longest side?

I don’t want to have to go through all the images and separate the orientations before processing them.

Thanks,
John

Try File->Automate->Fit Image. Tell it that you want the image to fit in a 1000×1000 box and it will do the right thing. If this doesn’t do what you need, you’ll have to look at scripting a solution.

Hi John

Don’t know if this would help, but with Windows XP folders you can have a dimensions column, and it would be a simple matter to sort by dimension and then only select say the top half of the list of pictures, (have you considered using Irfan view for this, you would have no difficulty in selecting which pictures you wish to process then)

I’m not sure which part you are asking about – windows folders or Irfanview?
If Irfanview – have you tried it?

no, rather windows folders. Specifically, how does XP filter for "Dimensions" (unless i’m reading your post wrong)

Hi Ken I have XP Pro but assume it is the same for Home !! open a folder with pictures in it – right click anywher in the header bar which shows size – type – date modified etc., – you will see a list of all the available headers you could have, the current ones are ticked – at the bottom should be the word ‘more’ click on that and tick ‘dimensions’ and there you are.

KEN EMITS LARGE "DUUUUH" SOUND ……Neato Harry! Didn’t know it did that. Thanks for the info and patience..heheh. I have since deleted the beginning of the thread so i don’t recall the specific "trying to do"…but that’s cool. Guess i shoiuld get to know XP a little better, eh?.. I see how it lists the file size… eg.. Hor/Vert (if i recall). Easy to tell if it’s a landscape or portrait orientation. Hmmm.. get it from a parser stream or object i wonder? Gotta be reading the JFIF info and i dunnoh if that would be a lot of use to us "low tech" volken. How would you implement this?

Also..that info is predicated by previous editing….eg..somebody rotated it already. Sooooooo….in their nascent state, they’re all 800 x 600; per sae.

Now, my cannon 20d knows the difference….but i’m not sure it passes it on when i upload the file.

Very interesting

gratefully
