How to add a border?

I am trying (in vain) to add a hairline rule or even a beveled frame border around several photos.

Can someone help me figure this out. I did what PhotoShop Help said to do,
[Selection Tool>Select> Modify>Borrder] but it dosen’t seem to work.

what version are you in?

in mine – show layers, double-click layer (or right click) for blending options
photoshop borders are called "stroke"

Gordon, You can always use the brush tool along with the shift key to create simple borders. For more complex borders, change brush sizes and colors George.

Gordon,

In PRINT PREVIEW you can check a box for adding a hairline border. Also, in the expanded lower section of this page (OUTPUT), you can add a border and specify the thickness.

Another way for a plain coloured border is to go to Image – canvas size – tick the box for relative – the size boxes will revert to "0" – add the dimensions you want – you can then choose the colour from the box marked – Canvas extension colour (It can be nice to use the colour sampler and choose a dominant colour from the image itself!!) If you want a gradiant fill border you can use almost the same technique, but you have to have a new layer beneath the image, which you then fill with the gradiant fill – and don’t tick the box for Canvas extension colour
