Hello all,

I have scans of 35mm negatives that show moderate to heavy vignetting. However this vignetting is not located in the center of the image. I would like to use PS CS to correct this, using 16 bits per channel. How do I set about it?

Regards,
alex

You might try the clone tool. You can of course crop the bad area out. Next time, use a lens that does not have this flaw.

Or, you can put the offending filter or shade on the camera and take a picture of a white wall. Then use the negative or slide or whatever as a mask. By varying the opacity and with a bit of trial and error, you may be able to control the vignetting.

Get the elliptical marquee from the tool box and draw an oval that includes all the area which is properly exposed. Create a new layer and create a layer mask from the oval, set your foreground color to white and fill the layer with white. Lower the opacity until the vignetting matches the center. Filter the fill layer with Gaussian blur and adjust the slider until the whole picture is well blended. You can use this same method with a black fill layer to create a vignette when you want one.

Alternatively there are any number of filter plug-ins you can get that will create or reduce vignetting, something you might want to look at if you have a large number of slides.
