I am a newbie to Photoshop, and currently have Version 6. If and when I chose to upgrade to either version 7 or CS, and have quite a few plug-ins currently, will I have to re-install all of those? Thanks!

Hi!
Plugins are set in a plugin directory.
From my perpective, installing a new version of photoshop (usually, you have to wipe out the precedent one) will require to set the plugins again. However, I see you are working from version 6. Upgrading to versions 7, CS or CS2 might work and then not work, depending on the version. I’m not sure of this.

When you upgrade it is a completely new full version (you don’t actually upgrade the previous version)
As for the plug-ins, It depends on the plug-ins – some 8bf files can be copied across from the old plug-in folder to the new one!! but those that require registration will possibly not be so easy to move? (registry entries!!)
It is possible to have both versions of Photoshop installed and running on your computer and I believe it is also possible to direct PS to search other locations for plug-ins, so theoretically you could have it search both the old and new folders – but presumably you would need to remove duplicates? I have never done this as I like to remove as much as possible of any old programme before upgrading!!

If you are going to remove the old version – I suggest changing the name of the plug-in folder to prevent the windows uninstaller from removing it also (It wouldn’t hurt to copy the whole folder to a new location – just in case)

When I upgraded to CS, from 7, all my plug-ins were left intact.

Not for most there are possibly a few plug-ins that might require such.

But – if you are going to upgrade – you should know that they just announced Photoshop CS2 (v9.0) this past Monday (April 4) with availability late May
