Hi,

is there a possibility to preview the psd-files in the windows-explorer, if the View-Option is set to Thumbnails? I can see all the jpegs and gifs but no psds..
Maybe there is, because to view the psd-files you do not have to have photoshop installed, every picture viewer can show them, so why not the windows explorer (e.g. plugin) ?

Thanks,
Nico

There was a recent discussion of this on one of these newsgroups, and I believe Hecate explained that although this was a possibility with PS7 there were viewing problems with windows and so the necessary .dll was intentionally omitted from PScs – so if you have PScs the answer is no!!

So the .dll from PS7 is not working for images generated by CS? Is the format different or what?

Not sure about that – but I have copied and pasted from the comp.graphics.apps.ps newsgroup so you can see the original post – I would have directed you to it if I knew how!!! It is actually the psicon.dll and not the psicons.dll as stated below!! I did wonder if it would be possible to copy the dll from someone with PS7 and paste to the PSCS directory and thereby allow thumbnails? – if anyone has PS7 and would be willing to send a copy – we could try it I suppose???

"That’s because it has nothing to do with the OS.

The problem is that Adobe created a .dll (psicons.dll) that interpreted the image and allowed Windows to show a Thumbnail. However, the implementation was so awful and Adobe had so many complaints (it was a prime source of several different methods of crashing Explorer) that they withdrew the .dll when they released PSCS. Consequently, if you have PS7 on your computer you will, normally, be able to see thumbnails. If you upgrade to CS and leave 7 on your machine you still will. If, however, you remove 7 then you will no longer be able to view thumbnails. Windows has no native ability to view the files and without psicon.dll, the ability disappears.

IMHO, Adobe made the sensible decision. Although there may be people who didn’t have a problem, the more people used that file, the more problems appeared both system wide and in PS itself.

No one out there to create a new dll? Adobe?

You might try ACDSEE. It does a great job of previewing psd files as well as a lot of other wonderful things.

Nico,

You got the answer to your question. Scruff had one workaround, and another is ThumbsPlus, which handles PSDs fine. It is not free, but does a ton of other neat viewing, organizing, editing stuff. Maybe with CS2 there will be a new, working .dll. Until then, we can only use other programs, instead of Explorer.

I know acdsee. As far as I could see on the thumbsplus webpage, this is also an extra programm you have to start for viewing the file! Even if you buy it, it does not allow you to directly preview the files in the windows explorer folder, which would be most convenient. Correct me if that is wrong!
In that case, I can stick to using XnView for that, which is pretty fine. Nico

Install CS then install PS7. Thumbnails will then work.
