What is the deal with jpg. 2000?

The VERY limited info that I have concerning jpg 2000 seems to indicate that it is a fairly good way to compress files without losing much detail. Question #1; is that true? Question #2 is why has it not received much recognition from programs such as our beloved Photoshop?

1) It works well in some situations, and not in others.

2) Lots of compatibility issues, lots of intellectual property issues slowing adoption, and generally slow adoption
