Question about transparency between photoshop and illustrator…

When i create an image in photoshop that i want to have transparency to it when i import it into illustrator, what do i need to do to the file so that the transparency transfers over to illustrator? is it a particular way i need to save it? I’m using photoshop 7 and illustrator 8
