I have a photo that I would like to save if possible. It has many things that need to be fixed which I can take care of with no problem. However the worst problem is the highlighted area on the face which I have not be able to fix. Can someone help me in fixing that area. I have the photo posted here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/22704125@N04/?saved=1 Thanks you help is appreciated.

Two possible approaches come to mind:

1. Since the man in the photo is looking directly at the camera, you might be able to select the opposite side of his face and flip it over (using free-transform)to cover the blown out highlights. With some levels or hue/saturation adjustments, masking, and and then possibly lowering the opacity a bit, you might be able to achieve a believable repair. In this case, it wasn’t working very well for me, so I went on to the second method.

2. Create a blank layer above the background, and sample some colors from the face and paint at a very low opacity with a fairly large, soft brush over the blown out highlights. This is tricky. You’ll undoubtedly see some of the brush strokes, but by blurring the layer until you can’t see them, then adding a little noise, you can build up several layers of color until it looks right. Mask away any color that spills out of the area you’re trying to affect. Experimenting with blending modes can help here. Lowering the layer opacities can also help.

Here’s the end result:

Using a technique I found in the Lab book by Dan Margulis I came up with the result posted here:

IMHO it is not as good as Lee’s image: I may have been too carefull 🙂 Greetings, Alex

cropped… Copied pic.. made a new document.. flipped new and rotated to match face of original pic.. cloned from flipped to original then healed the transition areas copied good eye, pasted back, flipped and rotated and put on other side… curves and sharpened… that’s about it See Practice cubed:

There is actually still a bit of detail in the face that can be brought out with curves in Lab mode. That, plus darkening and getting rid of the blue cast helps significantly.

Here’s my take:

I made a novice stab at it, but I think I should have used a higher .jpg level. It looks a little better in my files.
