I’ve been doing it for years, but only using flatten. ie: Works for me. I have a project, with 4 folders, 4 images in each folder in the DVD template, I show 16 thumbnails from each clip. 4 x 4 grid of images, using the folders for alignment purposes. After all is aligned [some white space between rows], I flatten and send to print.

merge layers
merge visible
flatten image

What’s the difference ?
I can use any one of the 3 options when I select the image. And they all do the same thing.

They sorta do , but if you hid some layers hidden you can merge only visible ones, not the whole lot, which is not the same as merge all layers. and finally of course merge layers you can select the layers to merge so it wouldnt doo all the lot

The way I interpreted this was:

merge layers: choose layers to merge
merge visible: merge only visible layers
flatten image: merge all layers

Oh crap, I should go to bed. I was thinking "Merge All Layers" for Merge Layers, which I guess is the same as Flatten Image.

Merge layers merges the layers into a layer, with transparency intact (as does merge visible)
Flatten image merges the layers into a background layer (which is not a real layer, no transparency possible)
It all depends on what you want to do with the image afterwards.

merge layers

Perhaps they changed this – I don’t have the current – it used to be "Merge Down". Active layer merged to the ONE beneath.

merge visible

Only layers showing merge. Any ‘turned off’ remain.

flatten image

Smash, Stomp, FLAT!

What’s the difference ?

Only if you have only ONE layer and its and the background are visible!

Merge Visible will only merge the active layers – teh ones that are visible. Flatten layers will just collapse all layers down into one single layer image.
Merge Layers will do pretty much the same thing, but it will give you better results if you’ve used any layer blending techniques.

That’s my understanding of it anyway. I could be wrong however.

each image has it’s own layer, 16 layers. 4 layers per folder. b4 flatten I have all aligned to a 4×4 grid of thumbs. I actually delete the background layer b4 working with the folders. via each layer/image in each folder.
all visible.

all visible.

Then "Merge Layers" doesn’t function as the older "Merge Down" !

Merge layers combines all the layers into one layer.

Flatten Image combines all the layers, then removes all transparency, then makes the sole remaining layer into a background. If you look closely at the Layers palette when you use Flatten Image, you will see that a flattened image has no layers whatsoever–it has only the word Background in italics.

merge layers, only diff would seem to be what they’re merged to.. It’s all still WYSIWYG. Either a layer, or back ground. —

Well, even English isn’t my native tounge but I think I can be able to explain the English term just by explaing the English word <bg>

merge layers

– Merge Layers = combining whatever selected layers.

merge visible

– Merge Visible = combining whatever visible (seen) on screen

flatten image

– Flatten Image = no more layer.

What’s the difference ?

You can use any of the avaiable option, and different options usually mean different result. It won’t hurt to try so I would suggest to give it a try to see for yourself. You can also UNDO to go back to the previous to try other.

Merge Down is still there, but it’s visible only when a single layer is selected. When multiple layers are selected, Merge Down becomes "Merge Layers"
