Fading Picture on top of Gradient–Help Please!

I know that I can "fade" a picture, using a gradient layer in PhotoShop (or in PSP, a gradient mask), so that the picture becomes more transparent gradually towards one end.

What I need to do now is use this effect on a background that is already a gradient (say white to blue), so that it looks smooth. I can use PSP, PhotoShop, or Ulead’s PhotoImpact.

My client still feels that this transition isn’t smooth enough. He wants to be unable to tell where the picture begins and ends.

Any suggestions?? I’m at my wit’s end.

Use a picture does not have a hard shadow at that end like the one in your picture?

Looks pretty smooth to me. Make sure your client isn’t trying to view your image with his/her display set to 16-bit color in Windows. Have him/her set it to 24-bit or 32-bit color. If the person won’t change, add a little noise to the gradient.

Agreed. This looks very smooth to me as well. It almost has to be the client’s machine settings.
