If you have a couple of layers and now you want to make a shape to punch down, do you put that shape on it’s own layer at the top? And you fill the shape or something like that…Not sure how that works. thanks.

on top of the other layer. In that way the other layer image will come out of the shape.

I ‘m trying the russel brown tutorial. I’m stuck on step 9. Can’t get past it. You are supposed to create a shape on top Layer? and then add drop shadow to that shape? I make a shape on my random top layer, but then when I click layer styles to do rest, everything is affected on that layer — not just the shape layer. multiply, everything goes dark. I don’t see anything mentioned about how to isolate that shape, so it’s not affecting whole image/layer.

Your shape needs to be surrounded by transparency for the drop shadow to work.

Scottie,

I haven’t looked at the tutorial but I am assuming you want "Shape Layers" and not "Fill Pixels". If you have the "Fill pixels" option on it is drawing the shape on your top layer instead of creating a new layer with the shape on it. Shape layers also have the advantage of being vector.

thanks, seem to have got it now. Was not getting it on it’s own layer before. Pretty amazing thing. Don’t know if I’ll ever use it in my own work — hope so.
