I have an image in which I want to tone down the highlights using the Healing Brush Tool. I did it by creating a new layer and setting the blending mode of that layer to Darken and than used the healing brush tool, in normal mode, to get the results. Than I tried it leaving the new layer mode set to Normal and set the Healing Brush mode to darken and got the same results. For my knowledge could you tell me if one of the above methods gives better results than the other? Also is it better to use which one of my methods in the future? Thanks

Hi Gary,

Both versions will give similar results. The advantages of using a layer are that you can back out the changes more easily later, or use layer masking and transparency to control the amount of change after the fact.

This is an unusual use of the healing brush – you may have discovered a new technique. You may also find that the behavior of your method is different if you convert the image to Lab mode during the procedure. Other ways to recover highlight detail include curves, shadow/highlight, and the burn tool.
