I have a photograph of the side view mirror of a car — it’s round but not circular, more elliptical but not uniform either. I have another photograph that I want to cut out a section of and paste over the mirror layer, but I want the edges of the top layer to fade from opaque to transparent so that the new section seems to be growing on the mirror.

After reading the CS2 Photoshop Bible, I’m still mystified.

Hi Norm,
One possibility would be to group the second image into a smart object then apply a mask to that object, the mask can be selectively blurred to fade the edges (I use the lasso tool to select regions of the mask to blur), to reveal the section you want to overlay. Then, with the second image above the first, use the transform controls to stretch, rotate and otherwise shape the section to fit the image below. Layer styles and blend modes can then be used with the smart object layer to further sell the final photo.

No fixed answer, but this might get you started, or stimulate others to contribute additional ideas.
The idea is to work with layers and masks. First cut out the shape, either in the mirror, or the object. then place one on a layer over the other. Place a mask on the top layer and by hand mask over the top layer, using more masking at the edges and none in the center.
If this sounds vague, it is because you will have to play with various combinations until you get the effect you like.
