I often import still images into Photoshop from my camcorder connected to the computer via firewire when I do stop motion animation.
I use file>import>wia sony dv camcorder to access a window that lets me make all of the captures.
Normally, the still images are captured at the same size as the camcorder creates, in this case 720 x 576 pixels at 72 dpi (PAL). This has always worked fine in Photoshop 7 and CS.
Now since I upgraded to win xp service pack 2, the same camcorder and computer are producing images that are 1/2 size, that is 360 x 288 pixels at 72 dpi. It happens with either Photoshop 7 or Photoshop CS if the system is on win xp sp2.
Is this a problem with how Photoshop and win xp sp2 work together, or am I setting something wrong? I can’t see any preference options that would affect this that I can change. I’m not sure where to look for options of this in win xp.
The same camcorder continues to work as expected when I do the still image captures on another computer at work that runs win xp sp1.
Can anyone please advise me on what may be going on here and how to solve the problem? Thanks a lot for any help.

Since Photoshop itself doesn’t import from firewire, that’s a service provided by Windows XP, so the change would certainly be in the Control Panels somewhere. I would check the properties of the camera in the Scanners and Cameras Control Panel area.

Thanks, I already did and there is nothing adjustable in those panels.

Ugh. That’s about all I could point you at. Sorry.

Is it possible that the size options in the camera have been reset?

No, the same camcorders will produce full size images if connected to a Win XP Sp1 system and half size images when on a SP2 system.

Have you reinstalled the software for the camera? Check for updated drivers as well.

This following is from Here <http://www.camcorderinfo.com/bbs/t106716.html>.

It is for a different problem but it may have the same solution. This was from October so it is very likely that there is a patch from your camera manufacturer and you should go that route first.

Use at your own risk…

"My solution was to copy the old Windows XP SP1 1394 drivers (dated 8-29-2002) back to the \windows\system32\drivers directory. The three drivers are; 1394bus.sys, arp1394.sys and ohci1394.sys. You may want to copy the current drivers (dated 8-4-2004) to a temporary location should you want to restore them later. I found the current drivers were also located at \windows\Driver Cache\i386\sp2.cab. From explorer, double-click on \windows\Driver Cache\i386\sp1.cab to display the contents. Highlight the three drivers listed above, right-click and "extract". Extract them to the \windows\system32\drivers folder and then restart.

I have yet to run into any difficulties running the SP1 drivers. All my video equipment functions correctly now."

Thanks,
The problem occurs with every camera I’ve tried so far, not just one. Win xp sp2 captures stills at 360 x 288 pixels and win xp sp1 captures stills at at 720 x 576 pixels from dv camcorders connected via firewire to Photoshop.
The camcorders require no software to be recognized by win xp as they are just a firewire device. The same camcorders capture fine when used to capture video with Premiere.

Did you try switching to the old files?

O thought that the actual size of the capture was closer to the smaller size and that the larger format was interpolated in software. Is it possible that if you resize the smaller version with Pshop you will get a better result than the larger size?
