Greetings!

I have a P4, 2.4G processor, a nvidia geforce4 Ti 4680 AGP8X/128M graphics card and Windows XP!

I do a lot of photographic work and I don’t think that my current monitor, a Viewsonic VA520 LCD, represents the full potental of my system’s capabilities; thoughts on that? I would like to replace it with a high performance 17", or maybe even a 19", if I could be convinced that the extra 2" is worth it. The "footprint’ is a big factor, so a CRT is out of the question.

Any suggestions for a monitor I should look at?

Thanks all,
Ray

You should be looking at TWO monitors – one for the picture, the other for the pallettes. It will make your work easier and faster. – Max

Get a bigger desk and a CRT.

Thanks for your reply Max, though I have to admit to my ignorance here; can you elaborate on why using two monitors would be a benefit, or can you direct me to a tutorial somewhere that would explain this in ‘dummy’ terms?

Thanks again!

I can’t, my wife has banned me to the kitchen and I have to do all of my Photoshop work from the kitchen counter, next to the sink!

My service bureau said they cannot get the color balance a CRT has to offer with LCDs. That point of view was six months ago so that could have changed by now. I am PC based and am very happy in the PC world. Since I do desktop publishing, photo manipulation and retouching, and NLE the 23 Cinema by Apple does intrigue me. It is the color balance issue that I am concerned about for I am calibrated with my bureau.

And they#re still right. LCD/TFT screens can’t get the accuracy CRT screens have. yet.

Apple 20" or 23" Displays are the only LCDs good enough to use for publishing. The 20" Display has a pretty small footprint and a wide format so you have plenty of room to put pallets and such. Also you can put 2 pages side by side in Quark. I’m not just saying this. The printer I use has these set up with their work stations. The bad news is that the Apple Displays have a wonderful proprietary connector made for Macs. The good news is that there is an adapter that you can use with your PC. 20" Apple Displays run around $1100 which is not bad considering Sony 22" CRTs with comparable image quality cost $1999. You’ll probably have to look around for the adapter, but I read an article about it on CGW and it is supposed to work very well. The 23" Apple Display runs around $2000 but has no equal in flat screen monitors. apple makes smaller dispays but none of them have the quality of the 20" or 23". Also the 20" has as much visible screen area as a 21" or 22" CRT and the wide format has a number of advantages for graphics pros.

Disagree. The Eizo and Planar monitors are just as good.
