CMYK Color problems in PS8

I have Photoshop 8. Color-wise, everything works fine in RGB. However, when I go to work in CMYK, regardless of my color managment profile or color proofing settings, the image always appears much darker than it should (see example at www.janelle.cc/ps8problem ). If I "save for web", the image appears correct. If I convert my CMYK file to RGB, it remains dark, as does a "save for web" image at this point…

When I open the same CMYK file on another computer running PS6, using the same color profile settings, everything looks correct (see example at www.janelle.cc/ps8problem ). .. Illustrator 11 displays the image just fine too.

Has any one else experienced this or have a solution? I have had to avoid serious CMYK work since Novemeber (when I purchased PS8 and a new computer) because of this issue.

Your problem most likely lies in your color settings and profile policies. There will often be visual changes to a file after converting to CMYK, but to have a large change in luminance as your’e seeing suggests that you may be converting with one profile, not embedding it, and then viewing it through whatever is your default profile.

Does the file "go dark" immediately on conversion or only when you re-open it in PS?

What are your exact settings and profiles that were used in the conversion, including profiles, working spaces and rendering intents?

The file goes dark immediately. I have tried it both on files with profiles assigned/attached, and on files that do not have a profile assigned.

My working spaces are set to US Prepress Deaults. I’m not quite sure that rendering intents are??

I don’t understand how this is an issue with PS6, seeing as PS 5.5, 6, and 7 (Win or MAC) all seemed to work fine for me, but PS8 (Win) doesn’t… I am in the middle of re-reading the section on color managment but have not yet found anything that sheds light on the darkness of my CMYK images.

PS8 started acting this way for me out of the box — I did have the 30 day trial installed before my full version arrived via mail. I don’t recall if it had the same problem or not. Could the trial version have left incompatible/corrupted color managment profiles that are causing problems now? As it is, switching PS8 into CYMK mode makes the program unusable because it reduced the luminance so dramatically…

Well, I just figured out that my problems are being caused by either my SVGA monitor at the office or my profile for it : I physically switched to a different SVGA monitor (my home monitor) and everything works just fine…

I’ll have to do some more trouble shooting, but looks like this thread can be closed.

Thanks to everyone who took time to address my question.
