Hi. The new Photoshop CS2 Tryout does not start on my PC (Win XP Pro SP1, all current hotfixes). The program window frame is there, but filled with white only, i don’t see any splash screen, nothing much loading.
Then i get the Win message: "Photoshop found a problem and has to be closed." When i click for details, there is this, among others:
Exception Information
Code: 0xc0000005 Flags: 0x00000000
Record: 0x0….
This cannot be copy-pasted, and the announced log file appcompat.txt seems not to be there. Did you have that too? I have about 500 fonts.

Now: i had the CS2 Suite beta before. When i first installed the Photoshop CS2 Tryout additionally to the CS2 beta in a different folder, i did not uninstall the beta. I could not install the tryout. – Then i only uninstalled Photoshop CS2 beta (keeping preferences). After that, the CS2 Tryout would install, but would not start, as described above. – Then i uninstalled the whole beta (removing preferences), uninstalled the Photoshop CS2 Tryout, re-installed it (rebooted between each step), but the same: The Tryout does not fully start, i only get a program frame filled white, then the "problem" message.

Now the de-installation of CS2 suite beta (through Windows software settings) seems not complete: – Photoshop CS2 beta still starts, but when it is completely there, a message says that name or serial are missing, and it closes.
– ImageReady can completely be used (but cannot start Photoshop from there, i get the same abovementioned message.
– Bridge seems completely gone.

What can i do now to use the Photoshop CS2 Tryout? Any line in the registry to be deleted? You think i can re-install the beta at least? (I will have the full version later, maybe Photoshop only, maybe the standard suite.)

Any tip would be great. Thanks!

It sounds like you’ve got some out of date or corrupt files.

You need to clean out the old beta files and reinstall the tryout.

Chris, thanks.

Now i found that i can install the Photoshop CS2 Tryout on my subnotebook. So the question remains, how can i clean out the old beta *properly*? I did the uninstall procedere through Windows settings; after that, some programs still worked (as described above).

After posting the original question, i looked what i still can delete on Drive C and in the application drive/folder. I deleted everything i found that might be relevant, uninstalled Photoshop CS2 Tryout, reinstalled Photoshop CS2 Tryout on yet another drive – but still it won’t start, it fails just like before – program window is just white, then i get the problem message.

So how could i get rid of the beta in a way that i may install the Tryout? Anything in the Registry that can be done?

Thanks!

I’m not sure – the beta uninstaller should have cleaned everything out. Adobe Tech Support might be able to help you find the problem files (or registry entries).

Chris, thanks, now i also followed all the steps for manual un-installation for Photoshop CS2 and Creative Suite 2 from the Support Knowledge Base, but still have the same problem: Can fully install Tryout, but it crashes 10 seconds after doubleclicking to start Photoshop. ImageReady and Bridge do work, but i cannot go to Photoshop from there.
Once i had a software that wouldn’t run because i had too MUCH RAM. Now i have 4 GB RAM, i wonder if that confuses Photoshop.
I also have CS1 Suite and PS Elements installed.
I guess i have to talk to Tech Support.
Thanks again!

No, that little RAM won’t confuse Photoshop.

Yeah, someone from Tech Support will have to walk through some troubleshooting steps with you to figure out why it’s crashing.

Chris, thank you. About "Tech Support", did you refer that telephone service that starts from 159 USD per year?

Or the telephone service that is free because you purchased the product…

Hi. Now i have the solution why i could not use Photoshop CS2 Tryout after having the CS2 Suite beta.

I logged into Windows XP with a different user name. And see – suddenly, Photoshop CS2 Tryout started with no fuss.

Then i renamed the "Adobe" folder in "Documents and settings" for my usual user name, then the Photoshop CS2 Tryout should work – i thought. I rebootet: Photoshop CS2 still did not work with that first user name.

Right now i work with the second user name. Photoshop CS2 Tryout as well as the whole activated CS suite can be used there. I still don’t know why the Tryout does not start with my original user name.

Thanks for your help so far again!

A few things you could try if you want to get your original user account working. Don’t know if this will work but it might be worth a try.

Shut down all Adobe apps and try deleting all files in FirstUserName\Local Settings\Temp. The PS install leaves a lot of stuff in here.

Then you could just replace FirstUserName\Application Data\Adobe with SecondUserName\Application Data\Adobe.

Mick, thanks for your tip again. I tried it, but it didn’t help – the starting Photoshop still crashes at the same time like before.
But interesting tip anyway, i was never aware that such a lot of useless stuff lurks in that folder (300 MB in my case).

Hi. Thanks to all helpful posters again.

Finally i found what made Photoshop CS2 Tryout crash upon start: It was a small utility "Filebox Extender" in the old version 1.7 (helpful to find favorite or recently used folders from within "Save"- and "Open"-boxes).

I had Filebox Extender in Autostart. Once i remove it from memory, Photoshop CS2 Tryout comes up with no problem. Big problem, odd solution, but thanks again!
