Our new scanner’s software associated jpgs and tiffs with itself. Even after I tell Windows to associate jpgs with Photoshop CS (where they open and view just fine). Adobe Pagemaker can’t import them – it seems to fail at opening Photoshop. Before now, it inserted them without asking any questions.

Does anyone know if Photoshop can take back its file associations automatically? Or, can someone tell me exactly what the settings for jpgs are in Tools…Folder Options…File types?

Hi Sharon
To associate any file type, including a jpeg with a particular programme you need to find a jpeg file in explorer (windows not internet) right click on the file – you get a drop down list which includes ‘Open with’ Click on that – you will probably see 4 or 5 programmes that Windows suggests you might like to use, underneath those click on ‘choose programme’ and navigate to the one you require.
Theres is a box to tick telling windows to always use that programme to open that file type!
Just a point though – are you sure you want Photoshop to open just to display a jpeg?? Most people find that Windows Fax & Picture viewer is the best programme to view jpegs, you can always right click and get P’shop to open the picture if you want to edit it.

Hi Sharon
If you find any jpg file and right click on it – you will see an option to ‘Open with’ – click that and you may see 4 or 5 options that Windows considers suitable!!
under that is the option to ‘Choose programme’ click on that and click your preference – then tick the box which says ‘always use the selected programme to open this type of file’
Just a point though – most people use windows ‘Fax & Image viewer’ to open jpegs in the first instance as it can be quite tedius waiting for PS to open merely to look at a picture!! – If you were to re associate a jpeg to windows ‘Fax & Image viewer'(this is the windows default) you can always right click and open with Photoshop to edit the file.

No, Photoshop can’t take back the file associations.
As for your second question, you were well on your way to changing the file association. The Help and Support facility tells you how to do this. When faced with essentially the same question, I finally had to remove and replace the jpg file type. That was the only way that I found that I could get Windows to do my bidding.

Why should Photoshop have to open to import a jpg into PageMaker?

Because she’s doing two things that aren’t all that great an idea. The first is using JPGs, though if they’re high enough quality shouldn’t be that big a problem. The second is a fatal mistake too many inexperienced Pagemaker users make. She’s using edit>insert object instead of file place.

So, to the OP…If you’re still paying attention, please visit the PM forum and check out the FAQs on proper file formats and the correct way to get them into your document. And you just might want to have a look at InDesign, too.

Bob,
Thank you very much for the file…place note. That solves the problem. I’ll go look at the Pagemaker forum for the right image type to use.
