I have a nasty habit of accidentally hitting the edge of the photo and activating "new guide". I have never used that feature, and I am wondering if I can just disable it so that it never comes up. I am often cloning at the corner to clean up a background, and I just keep snagging the edge.

Any idea how to get rid of it?

Do you have the rulers on? I’m pretty sure the only way to create a new guide is with the rulers on so if you turn them off [View>Rulers] I think that should help.

I too wish there was a way to dis-able the guides. It would seem that it would be very easy for Adobe to add a key that you had to hold down whenever you wanted to drag out a guide, so the guides wouldn’t come out on their own every time you crossed the edge of the photo while working on it. So far I haven’t found any way to solve this problem. Maybe the Adobe God will hear us and put it in the next version of Photoshop.

Presumably you both have the Rulers displayed. Hit Ctrl-R to hide the rulers, and there’s no longer any danger of creating new guides. Ctrl-R will bring the rulers back if you need them.

I need the rulers on. If I have them turned off, I can start making mistakes on the sizes I need.

Can’t turn the command off, but if you stretch the border out a little, you’ll get a gray border that will insulate you from the ruler clicks. —

I like this suggestion since I can still keep the rulers on. I hadn’t realized that there was a connection between the guides and the rulers. This will make my life much easier. Thanks Mike

Same here. This will definitely work for me and allow me to keep my rulers.
