I hope to buy a better mouse for my computer and would like to know what type of mouse to buy for photo editing. I need a suitable mouse that can accurately handing tracking the outline of an object.

Some brands and model numbers of mouse’s that other people use would be useful thanks.

For tracing an outline you can’t beat a tablet – Wacom has served me well. The equipment is solid, and they keep providing new drivers for their old hardware. The biggest decision is the size of tablet. I’m guessing you, like me, will do fine with a 4×5 tablet, which costs less and uses less space. If you draw with a broader movement, go for a larger tablet.

A Mouse is a mouse – although there are high performance ones for gaming, any USB optical mouse will get the job done.

"The Best" mouse is the mouse that works, and if you wanna go for "the better" toy for graphic work then TABLET is the way to go.

Make sure you can get an updated driver, one comes with the mouse or that you’re using a machine that came with a USB mouse.

I’ve had nothing but problems with USB mice on machines 3-4 years old! They include, random jumping, jitters, lack of continuity when holding down the ‘button’ and also the reverse – nothing held down but the mouse will ‘open’ everything it passes across!

All machines are XP, most are XP-Pro and all SP2. (SP3’s to be installed this week).

I’ve had the same problems with several optical mice.
Get a mouse pad.
Works wonders!

The why aren’t my 2008 new servers so affected?
The older machines (pre 2002) just seem to have the problem, not the newer ones!

Note: The new units -=come=- with a USB mouse, the older ones had PS/2. All have SP/2 (though I’ve just UG’d to SP/3).

as suggested the tablet and pen sounds like what you need

I don’t use one
but I don’t do much tracing work
when I do I use magnetic lasso and or wand
I have learned to control my lines with the mouse

I am used to the mouse
if you have small hands get smaller mouse (large ones hurt my hand) highly recommend shopping in person for the mouse
you have to hold them and try them out for comfort and fit

I do use a mouse pad, (a gaming one, it is smoother/faster than the desk, white desk with no texture is not so good for optical mouse) I have MS intellimouse explorer (USB)
I use a corded one
I don’t like cordless (batteries too heavy), this may not be the case for you as some people prefer the heavier

like the wheel ..like the extra buttons for everything except PS, in the driver I disable the side buttons which are set to alt/cntrl by default, touching them in error in PS is not good)
The intellimouse model is ambidextrous (I switch hands for gaming)

(Logitech is mostly for right handers, as are the thumb/trackball styles)

ALSO and very important
download the drivers for your model and brand

any mouse will work with Win Xp come-with drivers but will not show you all the options for programming the mouse’s extra buttons and advanced functions like double click speed and screen speed etc.

My sister was having double click pains from using her finger on top, she switched to a side button for clicking and she is more comfy using her thumb for the clicking

you can get serious hand fatigue and carpal tunnel from an uncomfortable mouse
I find using arm rests on my chair level with the desk, a great help

Mouse from HP
HP P/N 5188-2466 rev a
KYE P/N 31010832201

I’d say google for this part number. It may actually be available at the HP web site. It came with my HP computer.
I’m a big fan of HP. Particularly with a NEW refurbished AIO sitting in my storage that I didn’t expect when I accidentally trashed the original in warranty.

As for a mention of jittering and mouse pads. I have a pad that was designed with cross hairs in the pad. I quit using mouse pads, and just used the table top of the desk. No jitters, nothing.

I’ve recently added a Wacom Intuos3 $200+ mouse pad.The mouse now works like other mice, it jumps all over, jitters, opens things it shouldn’t open etc..

So here’s your choice a mouse that works, AND a tablet that may or may not help you with photo editing, but I’ll say this tablet is a good investment. I wouldn’t waste money on a cheap one when you can get one just as bad at 4 times the cost. Or go for broke with the $1999.00 top of the line. It doesn’t do double duty as a mouse pad.
tablets can do some things better than a mouse. ie: pressure sensitivity. If the tablet isn’t good at that you can do the same with a mouse. some have 512, others 1024. reviews say go with 1024, this narrows tablets down to a few.

ie: need a dark red line for 1/4 the length, fading to pink. mouse won’t do that. It has no pressure but 100%.

or a mouse that works.. I’d say jumping and jittering may be more a problem with mouse pads. I had no problems without a mouse pad.
