make the file smaller (merge a few layers)
add RAM

you can make more scratch space if you have drives unassigned to PS you can add removable drives for scratch

I don’t even do layers. I do basic editing. I have 1GB RAM and never had this problem b4.

You should do layers. Always work on a new file.
Ctrl/J before editing. I have 1gig RAM as well and never pick up problems.

About the virtual memory, or what is really called pagefile.sys which lies on the root of the drive you have your operating system installed in.

pagefile.sys size depend only on your installed (physical) RAM. You can change it manually but the default is 1.5 times the amount of your RAM. This is assuming there is contiguous space for the file. If there is not then it will be the size of the contiguous space that allows the closest to 1.5 times your installed RAM. You can use more then one pagefile.sys. Right-click My Computer | Properties | Advanced | Performance Options… | Change… | take it from there.

First off all, this depends on how large your file is and how many files you’ve opend.
Under "preference" you choose which HD PS use for the schratchfile. Don’t use the C: drive.
Then go to the slider and put it on 75% use for PS.

1GB is not much for use in PS,

Kimmik

1 gig is more than enough; for the average user.
Why would somebody drive a racing car in mid city where the speed limit is 60 kmu? Of course there is people working with massive files, in need for more. I have something like 1.060 and work with large files, sometimes, and never pick up problems.

If something has changed you may want to defrag your drives to see if that helps. Other than that you might investigate the memory use of newly added software or possible memory leaks from your virus checker.
