I noticed the upgreade price for CS2 is $149 either from CS1 or 7.0. Having upgraded from 7.0 less than 6 months ago ($169). I feel this is a rip off. Anyone else have any thoughts.

you’d feel worse if you upgraded only 2 months ago. 🙂

cheer up. it’ not like you have a bogus program. if you don’t want to update, don’t.

a couple versions back i ordered premire about 40 days before a new version came out. i was pissed too, but those are the breaks.

If you feel it is a rip off, then don’t buy it. The prior, version has been out for 18 months, so users will be paying roughly $100 a year to keep current in the software. The fact that you upgraded late doesn’t mean Adobe should be charging less for the upgrade.

Do like I do, and only upgrade on every other version if you feel the price is too high. I find the value best with alternate upgrades … a new version for a few features every year and a half is too pricy to me, but I don’t complain. I just skip the version and get the features a couple years later when the next version comes out.

You really should look at CS2 and decide if you think you need it. CS was a substantial change from PS7 because of added features for digital camera image processing and some improvements in the file browser. So far I have not seen much in CS2 for the way I use the program to justify the upgrade. Adobe has a way of providing new plug-ins that will only work with the most recent upgrade that make the upgrade seem more necessary so I will wait to see what happens in the next few months–resellers will be knocking down the price by then anyway.

I feel this is a rip off.

Judging from the number of posts from people using it, I’d say you’re in the minority.

Anyone else have any thoughts.

Yes. Pay better attention to the upgrade cycles. It’s no secret that Adobe is on an 18 month schedule.

As already pointed out, the fact that there’s a new version doesn’t make your old one stop working. If you don’t want to upgrade, don’t.

I don’t think the $20 lower price is much of an issue at all -certainly not what I would call a rip off.

Now, IMHO, I’ll tell you what I thought was kind of a rip off. When the first Creative Suite was launched there wasn’t any separation in upgrade price between a user who only had Photoshop versus someone who had multiple Adobe licenses.

I had licenses for Photoshop, Illustrator, GoLive, LiveMotion and PageMaker. Yet the price for the Creative Suite upgrade is the same for me as someone who only has Photoshop. That really isn’t fair at all. I think I should have received a better upgrade offer.

On the Macromedia side, at least they offered more than one level of upgrade pricing for StudioMX. I got a better deal for that since I owned licenses for Flash and Freehand. Someone who only had FH had to pay more for the suite. More fair, IMHO.

Hi Bobby,

I totally agree with you on that one. I have bought every version of Photoshop since 3.0 and also own Illustrator 9, GoLive 6, LiveMotions, Audition 1.5 (upgraded from Cool Edit 2) and every upgrade of Premiere since 4. I would love Indesign and After Effects but the packages are a bit out of my reach and if I bought the two suites I would have Photoshop CS2 three times and no credit for the other software I bought before the introduction of the Suites.

The software is excellent and I have no complaints except for the pricing policy. The double whammy is that I live in the UK and have never seen any attempt to justify the higher prices here.

If Chris or Scott are watching maybe they could pass on our comments to marketing as I am sure we are not the only ones with this problem.

Regards,
Ken
