The answer to this must be so obvious but after hours I still have not found how to centre text within the text box rectangle that I drag to size after hiting the Type icon.

I want to centre the whole selectionof text within that box so its bang in the middle.

look at the top bar after you choose the text tool
there are options that look like paragraph lines left, right, center

for more text options open the character palette

kerning, leading, spacing between lines, all caps, sub & superscript distortion oh so many choices

I just can’t see anything that will do vertical centering.

I agree it is not eay to find even if it can be done the help page implies it is not possible by a simple click of a button. I quote.

You can align type to one edge of a paragraph (left, center, or right for horizontal type; top, center, or bottom for vertical type). Alignment options are available only for paragraph type.

That seems to sa you can only vertically centre vertical text <grin> There will be work rounds though.

By the way your post will probably get a reply from a nutter called Arrtist Mike telling you you to find out for yourself. which is typical of him.
