Is there a simple way to put a hairline or outline around typefaces in PS? Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but I’ve searched around and can’t find any way to highlight or otherwise make type "jump" out of the background.

Bear in mind that a "hairline" in Photoshop cannot be less than one pixel in width.

That approach is fine for on-screen based graphics (like web pages). I would defer to Illustrator for that effect if the job is printed.

If you save the Photoshop file as a PDF the quality would be indiscernible from an Illustrator file.
