First off, let me appologize if any of this is repeated news. I could not find anything of this nature in searches.

Adobe Promised improved performance with CS2 and that holds true for the most part in my exprience. Opening PS, opening/saving images and various other functions all perform faster than the previous CS. However I have noticed in some ways CS2 is considerably more sluggish.

First off, my hardware setup:
Dell 4400
1.6Ghz P4
1GB RAM
GeForce Ti 4400
XP Home

Since I’m still waiting for Amazon to wake up and send my my pre-ordered CS2 upgrade, I’m currently using the demo version.

Whenever I have a brush selected (in fact it seems like when any tool except the magnifying glass or the move tool), my curser stops-and goes almost like it’s gettng stuck on something. I can close CS2 out and load up CS and the brushes work just fine there. Brush "stuttering" happens all the time regardless if Bridge is open or not and how many applications are running in the background.

I haven’t seen any strange CPU or RAM useage in task manager either…

I’ve also noticed that PSCS2 is a bit sluggish with multi-layer images and especially sluggish with images with several adjustment layers. Editing a 8-bit/channel image in CS2 happens at the same performance as editing a 16-bit/channel image in PS CS. When several adjustment layers are thrown in on a 8-bit/channel image, CS2 becomes nearly un-useable with images I had little problem with in 16-bit in CS.

Beyond these two things, CS2 has thus far performed quite well.

I’ve tried CS2 set to 50%, 60% and 70% RAM useage and haven’t seen any change in behavior between those settings.

Let me know if any additional info is needed.

Thanks,
Dan

Please post the amount of VRAM you have on your video card, and also the system info from Help > System in Photoshop itself. Please only post the top part of the data and trim the plug-in data.

Thanks.

I need to know if we will encounter any problems too! (Haven’t loaded it as it’s finals week…)I am having a feeling that either new video cards or new machines are going to be in my future!!!!!

Gateway (hateway) E-4100 series:

OS: Windows XP Version 5.1 Service Pack 2
System Architechure: Intel CPU Family; 15; Model:2, Stepping:9 with MMX, SSE Interger, SSE FP, SSE2, HyperThreading
Processor Speed: 2593
Built-in Memory: 495 (actually 512 but 16 MBs is shared with the video card) Free Memory:178 MB
Memory available to Photoshop 448MB
Memory used by Photoshop: 50%
Image Cache levels:4
Use image cache for histograms:NO
Application Folder: C\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop CS
Photoshop scratch has async I/O enabled
Scratch Volumes
E:/23.6G, 22.6G free.

Don’t ask–I spec’ed Dell 370 workstations and this is what I got…don’t know what type of Video card is in the box as Gateway does not tell on their site, all I know it that it is shared and uses 16 MB of system RAM.

Thanks!!!

I don’t think there’s anyway to tell without trying it christine. i’m guessing the adobe guys are still trying to figure out why some system are slow and some aren’t… even on very similar or high powered machines.

I’m not Photoshop engineer, but for daniel’s setup, I can see that the D: drive is full at 90%. Even if it is not fragmented, it must be on the slowest area of the disk, and the E: drive is pretty small…

An Update: I upgraded my video drivers to the latest version (71.89) and noticed a slight improvement in rendering speed of layers and now things render closer to the speed PS7 does. Curser movement hasn’t changed a bit however.

I also have noticed that when in ACR (through PS or Bridge) cursers move just fine. It’s only when in PS that it’s a problem.

Pierre, I don’t have a D drive… My main scratch disk is my F drive and that is for nothing but PS scratch. The secondary scratch disk is my E drive which has well more than enough for PS to use. I rearely go beyond what my F drive provides.

I’m just having a Heimlich the Caterpiller moment dave (where the circus bugs meet the grasshoppers)as this summer my dean of instruction expects these systems to run the full version of AutoCad and CS2…At the same TIME!!! I am scaarrredd that the machines will explode (which wouldn’t be a bad thing, but there is no money in the foreseeable future to replace them either!)

Testing starts next week…I’ll be back!

Daniel,

do you have ‘Info’ Pallete active?

If you do, close it and try what you did again.
I had similar problem and this was a solution.

Well I’ll be danged. It was the Info Pallete. I closed the pallete and the brushes are butter smooth. Now that just stinks, I need my info pallete.

Determined to not loose my Info Pallete, I tried disabling options one at a time. I went through them all and no dice. The pallete itself is the issue.
