Can I take a 4 inch by 6 inch photo and convert it to a smart object and than make it an 8 inch by 10 inch photo in Photoshop CS3 and print it without any loss of quality? Thanks.

Using a smart object won’t help with this issue – smart objects being a way to package existing commands conveniently. If the image is sharp, and 1000 by 1300 pixels or more then it should print just fine as an 8×10.

Pixel dimensions define the amount of "stuff" in the image, which is why so many people here emphasize the importance of it. If your image is under 1000×1300, try printing it anyway and see how you like it. If you want to save on cost, print a small section as a 4×6 – which will cost 17 cents or so.

I’ve gotten away, with some tricks, with 640 x 480 printing at just under 8×10 with a border.

Resizing the image and using Unsharp Mask with a radius of about .6, 125 percent is a good starting point. If this image is right out of the camera, odds are that the appearance can also be improved by bumping the color and contrast, and removing the color cast.

Ok let me ask this question in another way. Can I scan the 4×6 print in to Photoshop at a particular resolution and be able to than print it at a 8×10 inch size without losing any quality? Or can Genuine Fractals take the 4×6 print and convert it to an 8×10 inch print and not lose any quality? Thanks.

Ok,what else can I do but try to answer again?

In general, the 8×10 will be a little fuzzier than the original, but it depends. If the original print is very sharp, and has detail that is not easily visible, you may get a sharp 8×10 out of it. This is the case, for example, with older contact prints.

Gary, an image can never being enlarged (nearly to 200%..!) without losing quality. Whether it will be obvious is something else. Some contributors (here), assumable professional people, maintain that Genuine Fractals is nothing better that PS’s own facility. I love Fractals but have no problem using PS itself.

Your question should thus not be whether any one would do it without losing quality but rather which one would do it with the least lost of quality. Both do a good job – if you do effort and do not simply leave it to the machine. Do it both ways, and decide for yourself – even if only on screen.
