How do I select with the Pen Tool?
Or transform a Pen tool drawing into a selection?
Like many people (who would hate to admit it), I ignored the pen tool for years, but nowadays become more and more interested in it. Starting to realize the enormous benefits of knowing and using it. Should I transform it into a path, or which what and how?

MacBook Pro 16” Mockups 🔥

– in 4 materials (clay versions included)

– 12 scenes

– 48 MacBook Pro 16″ mockups

Dave found these unused words:

How do I select with the Pen Tool?
You don’t, it’s a drawing tool.

Or transform a Pen tool drawing into a selection?
Select all, deselect transparent part of layer.

I visited the help files before writing here, and unless I searched wrong place, the help files are not very help full. Thereafter I read ‘Photoshop CS3 for Nature Photographers’ and
‘Photoshop CS3 for Photographers’ before writing this.
Neither gave me the answer. Maybe again I searched wrong place on the books which is quite large.

Obviously you do not know. Why did you reply? Love to see your name and wish-to-have title on your screen?
Back to my books, which is more than mentioned
and if you ask nicely, I’ll teach you how.

To transform a Pen tool drawing into a selection, CTRL+CLICK the relevant path in the Paths palette.

Obviously you do not know. Why did you reply?
Lets’ see …

Answer #1 you acknowledge as being correct, having asked how to use a ‘common knowledge’ DRAWING dool as a selector!

Answer #2 Also correct, though you ignored it.

Item #3 – considring the clueless queries on this group, an appropriate answer considering your previous display of apparent lack of knowledge.

Love to see your
name and wish-to-have title on your screen?
Back to my books, which is more than mentioned

NO, I don’t need to know how, as I have taken the time to read, probe F1 and experiment.

Perhaps if your query had shown some evidence of your ‘efforts’ so far, you might get a more specific, directed reply. But as a usual ‘newbie’ type error filled, "I dunno how to" -you get what you get!

Your warranty is now Vovoid’d.

PEN TOOL CAN BE USED TO SELECT
many people prefer it
NOT JUST A DRAWING TOOL

after you surround your cut out area with the pen there is a line with points etc IT IS CALLED PATH in the help

go to the PATH Palette
little rectangle with a dotted circle
click it and the line (path) becomes a selection
VOILA

you can go back and forth as well

selections can be made into paths

path is good for typing into funny shapes
along an edge etc

1000 Thanks for your help, KatWoman.
I see myself as quite experienced with Photoshop,
….right up to a few days ago when I clicked ‘P’….O

Not only for cutouts, but also when coloring a drawing,
selecting is (almost? no really:-) a necessity.

I wonder how many of our friends are using the Pen Tool. This may become a very interesting discussion if we talk about it and people learn this which I experience right now, which is that while you start being very clumsy with the Pen Tool, you become more handy with it by the day.

Thanks for your reply.

I have seen several video turorials how Pen Tool works and I think it’s a very powerful tool (I wish I have learned it years ago), but since I am doing quite well with other tools, and pen tool doesn’t seem to work well with my style so I still haven’t learned to master the Pen Tool.

Or it could be a a very powerful tool for most people, but not my style.

The pen tool is the most powerfull of all selection tools. It allows you to make very precise and clean selections. You can use it as a drawing tool too, but you don’t have to, all depends on which options you selected to ‘act’ with the pen tool. (shape layer/path/pixels)

For general use I agree that Pen Tool is very powerful and best tool for the need of many people. But because I work on close-up human portrait so Pen Tool has no use.

I have seen few commercial video turtorials use Pen Tool and to me it’s cheating and showing off as I know for sure it just won’t cut for detail and large print.

Yes, when you have a complicated outline on what you want to select, what could you possibly use instead? Freehand Lasso? Magnetic Lasso? Magic Wand?? LOL! Using the Pen tool makes a clean and accurate selection very quickly, while you will be adding and subtracting from a selection made in any other way for a long time, and end up with a inferior result. Anybody that cannot draw quick accurate paths is doing themselves a massive disservice.

I learnt to use the Pen tool for making path selections soon after I started using Photoshop, after I read the Photoshop v5 version of this book:

http://www.photoshopforphotographers.com/pscs3/index2.htm

The latest edition of this book is three times as thick now, as Photoshop is a bigger program too, but the book is still just packed with very high quality knowledge. It’s not an easy book to read, but a lot better than any other large Photoshop books that I have seen in the bookshops.

PEN TOOL

It is not my favorite to work with

I still have trouble using the curve handles

but one guy on here a while back he was cutting out a very intricate bird wing
against a jumbly background

not an easy thing with wand or select color range

not even magnetic lasso would be too great

and he was using PEN tool
I had not seen anyone use it like that before
but it looked worth knowing

for a long time I did not use masks then I learned and cannot imagine how I got along without it
same for channels
at first I was like WTH is that for?
I liked levels till I figured out curves
hated PS file browser now love Bridge
etc

all good
so many ways to get to the same place
if you get the result you need visually
well no one’s business how you made it

there are SO many ways to slect

Easier way… forget about the curve handles.
Draw your line from point A to B.
CTRL Click somewhere else in the canvas.
Add Anchor Point Tool
Click somewhere on the lines to create Anchor
Points.
Hold the Points and draw.
It become easier and easier.
Try it.

You’re very welcome, Dave.
I just came across it myself.

Mind that Corey Barker is explaining it the easy (long) way. You can eg. hold the Ctrl key while in pentoolmode and that’ll change the tool to direct-select.
Holding down the Alt key will allow you to separate the nodes, or to redraw the node-direction.
You’ll find out as you get more comfortable with the tool.

Select the path (hold ctrl and click anywhere on the path) When you hover over the path, you should see the pen with a plus-sign. When you hover over a node you see the minus-sign.
Just make sure that ‘auto add/delete’ is checked in the toolbar. Also, to help you draw more easily, there is the ‘rubberband’ option, right next to the customshape-select in the toolbar (the little flyout arrow) Check that and you see where your path is going.
It takes much longer to explain than to do all this 🙂
