Extracting to black background?

I understand how to extract (I’m using 5.5) but it seems to work best with a transparent background. I’d like to extract a digital portrait of a child and put it on a black background. Anybody able to help?

Make a new layer, fill ir with black, drag it below the other layer.

You’ll have to clean up the edges of the extracted portrait.

And you can use the History brush to restore any little edge details that were erased.

Right. Although I never erase if I can avoid it. Layer Masks are better for a number of reasons.

I tried that method and got a pretty poor result. But I’ll give it another try.
