Tools and drop down menu words stopped working

I bought a computer with Photoshop on it. I discovered it months after I bought the computer and it worked fine. I designed my catalog web site with it. Now, months later, I want to add more pictures to my web site.

I can not make borders around the pictures because the word "Modify" in the drop down menu under "Select" is gray and inoperable. It was black and worked fine before. There are other gray words on the drop down menues. Also, the eraser and the clone tools no longer work.

Can anyone help me?

I bought a computer with Photoshop on it.

Don’t want to pour cold water on your enthusiasm, but did you inherit the licence too?

Check to see what mode you are in. Image>Mode. Some modes won’t work.

unless you have a transfer of license for photoshop from the original owner, your copy is illegal and you need to remove it immediately.
