I duplicate an image and make exaggerated edits in order to make a better selection. How can I save that selection without saving the duplicated image (to save disk space)? Thanks.

Select menu, save selection as, pick somewhere on your HD and give it a name.
You can load it whenever you want from the select menu and choose ‘load selection’

Make the selection into an Alpha Channel. In the Channels palette click the little selection icon at the bottom.
