Hi all,
Not 100% if I am in the right group or not but hopefully someone can help.

This is probably a very very easy thing to do for someone experienced with different photoshop etc.

Basically I have a old newspaper cutting from 1968. I need to get the photograph of the football team from the top of the page. When I scan in the paper it comes to relativity good quality. However the photo is not a standard photo size.

I want to resize it to 7×5 but if I try crop it I lose out on a good bit of the picture. What I did was make a plain gray background sheet (that was 7×5) in word and then copied the image onto it so as to make it the standard size, and the leftover parts were just background. However I was not able to save this as a .jpg. I have MS Paint, Adobe Photoshop Elements and a trial version of Coral PSP.

Hope this makes sense.
All help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Niall.

I don’t have PS Elements, I have the full PS, but you should be able to bring in the original picture, create a new layer under it in whatever size and colour you want, make whatever adjustments/edits/clean up you want in the picture, then export/save the whole thing as a jpeg. That’s a relatively simple procedure. Forget using Word for any of this. Or Paint. PSE is the answer.

One more thing about cropping…PS will allow to set the crop tool to the desired aspect ratio (5×7) and then crop for best effect. If the original image is say 6 x 10, the crop tool can give you the entire 6" with the 10" side sized proportionately. When you print, you simply shrink the picture to fit the 5×7 final size you want.

I can’t see the picture to know exactly what you need or want to do, so I give you 2 basic options. Also, I don’t use Photoshop Element to know where the option locates, but

– Selecting the CROP TOOL then set to whatever standard size you wish, then just select the erea you want to crop. Since you set the specific RATIO then Photoshop will maintain the exact RATIO.

– Creating a new canvas with the RATIO you want, then drag & drop the photo to it, then fill the emptied space. How to fill the emptied space will depend on your photoshop skill

Thanks,
Niall.

There is no difference between the full Photoshop and Elements in this respect.

However I was not able to save this as a .jpg.

Flatten the image before saving as .jpg.

I think so too, but since I don’t use Photoshop Element so I make sure the OP knows what to expect. Yes, I do have several versions of Photoshop Element came with my hardwares, but never installed any to know for sure.
