Okay, I’m doing the trial, and loving it except for one thing.

What happened to the import frame from video? I see I can bring in a video file in ImageReady, but that takes a long time.

The old way was an excellent way to capture a still shot off video. Is it gone from Photoshop or am I missing something?

You’re not missing anything, but you may be remembering things being where they never existed.

The "import frame from video" option, as far as I recall, has never been in Photoshop proper. There’s a version of it in Photoshop Elements. Also, when you open the video file in ImageReady, there’s a "selected range only" option, and if you choose that but don’t set a range in the video window (ie, hold down the shift key and drag), you’ll get just a single frame.

Nope, it’s in Photoshop 7…File>>Import>>Frame From Video

But it is also in Elements 2, which came with my Wacom, so I guess when I am able to buy CS2 I will be safe to uninstall PS7.

It’s a shame though…I hate to see that feature tossed.

Strange… I have Photoshop 7 installed too (7.0.1), and I don’t have that option. Like I said, I don’t ever recall it being in the program (since version 3, anyway, when I started using Photoshop).

My guess: maybe you had transferred the Elements 2 plug-in over to PS7, or maybe you set your Elements plug-ins folder as an alternate plug-ins folder in the preferences. It’s wouldn’t suprise me that an E2 plug-in works in PS7. No such guarantee the same plug-in will work with CS2, tho.

Nope…I’ve gone from Photoshop 5, 5.5, 6 and 7.

It’s not a plugin…it’s under the file menu like I said in the above post.

tina, i think you’re missing a plugin (maybe a twain driver?). i don’t have that option either. in cs or in cs2… and i don’t rememeber it in 7. believe me i woulda used it for screen grabs of the kids! 🙂 seems to me that all the items in my import list are twain-ish devices. scanner, camera, etc.

maybe something loaded on your system that needs to be reloaded or set up for cs2?

Could it be because I have a webcam hooked up that I have this option?

Although the import webcam appears in my menu as well..

definately 3rd party. check scanner and camera wizard. maybe reinstalling the driver will add it to the list. not sure why it didn’t pick right up though. cs2 picked up everything in my cs menu…

That looks like it may have been taken from Photoshop Elements 3. See this page < http://macgroup.infopop.cc/eve/ubb.x/a/tpc/f/148101437/m/107 104977>, which says this feature is available only in Elements 3, not in Photoshop. Yet the title bar says Photoshop.

Nevertheless, you can import frames from video via ImageReady. Just click on File>Open in ImageReady, and pick a .mov or .avi file. This will open a video viewer, somewhat different from the one above, that will let you select which frames to open (each as a separate layer) in ImageReady. Then pull this into Photoshop for editing.

Well this is the trial, and I’m currently using PS7. I’m only using the trial until Staples gets CS2 in, so I’ll deal with it when I’m using ‘the real deal’.

Well, I’ve had Photoshop 7 since it came out, and I’ve only had Elements *2* for a few months (it came with my Wacom), and I’ve always had that menu option, so that can’t be it.

I’m pretty sure, that I had that menu option in Photoshop 6 as well.

Take a look in your PS7 plugins and presets directories and subdirectories to see if there is a frame grabber or video importer installed. Maybe in the File Formats directory?

Okay I have:
Plugins>>Adobe Phiotoshop Only>>Automate>> VideoFrame.8LI

…which I copied over to CS2 and voila! I have that feature back!

Now I’m totally curious about how many other people have this option, since I’m sure I read it somewhere that you can grab video still out of Photoshop.

did you test it? if it works, cool beans.

Well, it does bring the window up, but once a Video file is loaded it causes CS2 to freeze, and I need to end task.

It’s a fast machine, so I’m assuming that this isn’t compatible. CS2 Trial is running bare bones, I don’t have my normal ton of plugins, shapes, brushes, garadients, styles, etc. etc. loading.

I’ll bet that was copied over from Elements at some point and just happened to work in PS7.

i’ll bet it was installed with the camera and there’s some support files you need in addition to just the plugin… 🙂

The screenshot Tina posted looks exactly like the Elements dialog. So I have my doubts that it was third party, but it came from somewhere. Tina, what camera or other plug-in packages have you installed?

(Incidentally, I tried putting the ImageReady plug-in into Photoshop CS2, and that also caused a freeze when selecting the video file. I have a feeling there’s also a DLL file or somesuch necessary for Photoshop to read video files.)

It couldn’t possibly have come from Elements since I’ve always had this feature. I’ve been pulling video stills from VHS tapes via a camcorder hooked to my webcam for several years now.

•• I’ve only had Elements installed since getting it with my Wacom, a few months ago ••

I have an Intel Pro PC Webcam hooked up, also have a Nikon Coolpix 995 digital, but don’t have it’s Nikon View software installed. However…of the Nikon’s disc I did install Genuine Fractals LE 2.0, and something else….later on this evening I’ll pop in that Nikon disc to see if it may have come from there, since the Nikon will shoot 40 second Quicktime video.
