Photoshop 7.0.1 won’t open the new Adobe "open format" DNG files now will it open RAW image files from my Pentax *ist DS camera. Can’t get an answer from Adobe on this and think that there must be a plug-in to allow opening both types of files. Anyone help with this.

What makes you say that? RAW support is pretty clearly missing from 7.x

and think that there must be a
plug-in to allow opening both types of files.

It’s called "CS2."

Their 7.0 product predates their DNG format.
There was a separate RAW plugin for 7 but I doubt you’ll get hold of it easily now.
Go for CS[2]. Or go for Capture One.

PS7.0.1 will open many raw file formats. Examples: Nikon .NEF, Camera Raw .NEF, .CRW,.RAF,.TIF,.ORF. But will not directly open my .PEF files. So I’m looking to have Adobe offer a plug-in for .PEF files and also Adobe’s .DNG files. And CS2 is not a plug-in
Its not worth another $150 to upgrade to CS2.
Elements 3.0 will open my raw files and Adobe’s DNG files. And Adobe’s DNG Converter will convert my PEF files to DNG, but after the conversion, PS7.0.1 cannot work with the DNG files. And DNG is Adobe’s own raw format that is supposed to offer a "standard" raw format rather than the many proprietary formats – and its "open" so that many photoediting packages can work with raw files. But Adobe’s own PS7.0.1 will not open the files. So, come on Adobe, please send a plug-in for DNG and PEF image files.

Clark, there are many third party raw converters that open DNG, including freeware ones. I compiled a list at this post < http://avondale.typepad.com/rawformat/2005/04/dng_support_st a.html> at rawformat.com, and several apps came just after.

But upgrading to CS2 would be one of the best ways to spend $150.

Asking adobe to do a plug-in for PS7 is like asking a car manufacturer to add support for unleaded gaz on an oldtimer…

Clarke,

Once a new version is released there is NEVER any additions or patches for previous versions. Upgrade or get over it.
