I just bought two Photoshop CS2 Upgrades for two different machines. One PC hat Photoshop CS installed and upgraded. The other PC had no previous Photoshop installation and I provided the older version’s CD (Photoshop 7) to complete the install. The installations completed successfully. Adobe ImageReady CS2 works just fine, but Photoshop CS2 does not start. It stops with a crash…

"Adobe Photoshop CS2 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

I am stuck with two "not-working" Photoshop environments.

I desperately need help to get this resolved. I went through some knowledgebase docs but nothing helped.

Windows XP environment.

Sometimes I am able to launch Photoshop CS2 from within ImageReady CS2 (Edit in Photoshop option). It launches very, very slow and when closing Photoshop CS2 it crashes at that stage.

We need more information…

OS?
Have you checked for bad fonts?
Have you tried reinstalling?
What other troubleshooting have you done?

Resetting the Preferences file as per the FAQs would normally resolve this type of problem. (Press Ctrl+Alt+Shift whilst firing up Photoshop).

I just wonder, however, whether it might be an activation issue?

You say both machines are affected. If I am reading your post correctly, the implication is that the PS7 used to verify the upgrade on machine 2 was originally used to upgrade the CS on machine 1.

If this is so, you are effectively attempting to install two instances of CS2 from one upgrade path and this could be confusing the activation software.

I may be wrong but, although you have bought two upgrade packages, I imagine each would have to be used to upgrade separate individual earlier installations.

Ironically, either one of your new CS2 upgrades will allow activation on two machines at once anyway!

Hope this helps shed some light on the problem.

Chris.

I found the problem program. It is Hyperionics FileBox Extender. When disabling the program CS2 works fine. I just got a download from Hyprionics with a new release to fix the issue.

Along those lines. I upgraded to CS2.Been using CS1 with no problems with add on plugins. When I imported my plugins to CS2 I get error messages at the start up telling me this dll and that dll is missing and a bunch of other error messages then CS2 starts up.

I will install them one at a time to find out which one is causing the problem. Anyway, love CS2 so far and as always, I’m glad I upgraded.

don’t just point at the old cs folder, that can cause major problems!

starting with 7 i installed all my 3rd party plugs to a seperate folder like "davesPlugins" and point there in the prefrences. works like a charm. i’ve not had to reinstall plugins since then. 🙂

Dave,

I know I sound like a broken record but thank you very much again for your help and that tip. I did as you said and CS2 opened perfectly and all my CS1 plugins are there.

Peter – thanks. We’ll have to get Tech Support to take note of that problem.
