I bought AdobePS7.0; Classroom in a Book. It goes with a CDR. A very good book for beginners, like me. It costs, here in the Netherlands 40 Euro.

I picked up Adobe CLassroom in a Book from Amazon.com and I am upto chapter 9 now. I knew Photoshop a little but was no expert. This book is very good and comes with a CD with the examples. I think the book covers everything that Photoshop does.

Adobe Photoshop Classroom in a book walks you through the app with exercises. Then when you’ve finished that you can start to ;learn as you’ll know where everything is. Maybe 😉

Not having seen this book, I can guarantee it doesn’t cover everything that Photoshop does. 🙂 Here are some books I would recommend.

Elementary:

Adobe Photoshop 7.0 Studio Techniques
by Ben Willmore
2002, ISBN: 0321115635, Adobe Press
Read this book to get a solid foundation.

Photoshop 7 Killer Tips
by Scott Kelby, Felix Nelson
2002, ISBN: 0735713006, New Riders
Read this book between pitches while watching
a baseball game.

Photoshop 7 Down and Dirty Tricks
by Scott Kelby
2002, ISBN: 0735712379, New Riders
Read this book between plays while watching an
American football game.

Intermediate:

Photoshop Restoration & Retouching, 2nd ed.
by Katrin Eismann, Doug Nelson
2003, ISBN: 0735713502, New Riders
Read this book if you are interested in portraiture
and photo restoration and like a concise style of
writing.

Photoshop 7 Artistry
by Barry Haynes, Wendy Crumpler
2002, ISBN: 0735712409, New Riders
Read this book if you are interested in landscapes
and commercial photography and like a verbose style
writing.

Advanced:

Photoshop Channel Chops
by David Biedny, Bert Monroy, Nathan Moody
1996, ISBN: 1562057235, New Riders
Read this book to learn about channels, masks, and
blending modes.

Professional Photoshop: The Classic Guide to Color Correction by Dan Margulis
2002, ISBN: 0764536958, John Wiley & Sons
Read this book to learn about curves and color correction.

Well, I guess if you are like me learning Photoshop 7 and not sure what all it can do, you never know if the book covers everything.
But from what I have learned so far, it is an awesome piece of software! I can’t imagine what more advance topics could cover except maybe more complicated use of the tools I have already seen.

Actually, truly advanced techniques generally become simpler, not more complicated. "Channel Chops" is a prime example of this.

The difference is in the user understanding *why* the technique works and therefore when to use it, rather than simply following a preset list of steps.

Yes, I agree. It is too easy sometimes just to follow the steps without stopping and understanding what you are doing. When I am doing good and paying attention, then I can figure out or guess what the next step is and that is when it really sinks in.
