I’m thinking about testing the speed of PCs at store using filters. What filter(s) take the longest time to finish in general? Maybe filters that can test different speed about the performance of a PC.

Thanks,

Thanks,

Gausian blur is often used to test.

But you have to know what you are testing. Do you know all the components CS uses? All versions?

Thanks,

Photomerge. Use a few large files to create a pano, check ‘blend layers’ Make some coffee…

Thanks,

So PS will be installed on all the PC’s in the store?

Very unlikely even to have one with PS.

Good point. One alternative would be to get a few standard benchmark tests on a memory stick, and record the results to a log file. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benchmark_(computing)

POV Ray is free, and makes a good imaging and memory intensive benchmark. —

I have Photoshop CS2. Gausian blur takes too short a time (less than a second) on the 5MB image I have. I found Colored Pencil takes 6-7 seconds on most laptops I tested. I am looking for a filter that takes even longer so it’s easier to compare speed.

That would be too long in a store. Any in-between solution?

Good point, but you can find Portable application on net that you put application and test files on a Flash drive and do multiple tests in store. The people working there do not like you too much. You have find a time when less people around to do it.

Tests of this sort have been done.

If your test image is 5mb, then your test will be relevant only to that file size. Larger files are handled faster with machines with lots of RAM (and can address that extra RAM). IOW, you will probably find a Mac Pro with 8gb of RAM handles larger files best, but is only a bit better with tiny 5mb files.

I rarely work with files that small, so I have to go by what works best on my largest and most critical tasks.

5mb is peanuts.

Then there is the speed of your scratch disc, whether you have more than one on the bus, all that.

So is it available somewhere online so to save my time?

Thanks,

I can’t find it but there was a Photoshop"speed test" posted to the forums on www.dpreview.com a long time ago where, IIRC, in just a few steps you created a new very large file in PS with a checkerboard pattern and then applied the blur. I think it took one minute to build the file and about two minutes to apply the filter on a so computer.

This was either in their PC forum or Retouching forum. If you ask there you should get a good answer.

Aha, It doesn’t look like you had a chance to try the test I showed you(?) Or which column was it?
