Is it possible to change the opacity on part of a layer (ie a selection) to reveal that underneath? I can’t find anything….
Thanks so much

Once you’ve got your selection, click on the layer mask icon on the layers palette.

You could also try using the eraser and setting it to be only partially opaque (or partially transparent, same thing). Although Pierre’s method is probably more what you’re looking for, it’s always good to have more than one way to do things.

hi emma,

Im not sure if it is the quickest method but you can do it this way: Make a selection > right mouse click > Layer via Cut > set layer transparency in the Layer Pallete > Merge the two layers into one
– but there is a little problem if you made a antialiased selection..

other possibility is to use Eraser Tool and set a opacity for it

but the best solution is to use a Mask feature (Layer > Add Layer Mask > Reveal All) .. then you can make a selection and fill it with a B&W color (black will make selected range of layer absolutely transparent, white absolutely visible) – but make sure you edit layer’s mask and not the layer’s image itself (you can select it in Layer Pallete). It is the best solution because you dont loose any data from original image.

// sorry my english:)

good luck
