Unsharp mask — not just for sharpening

A friend sent me this URL

< http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/contrast-enhance ment.shtml>

There are 2 additional links at the end of the article which you should read as will.

It discusses the use of the Unsharp mask to make subtle contrast adjustments and reduce haze in an image. Interesting procedure that is worth a read.

Ya’ll need to check out KPT6’s "Equalizer" plugin.

For critical sharpening, this is my weapon of choice.

I’ve been using ‘Equalizer’ for about four years now, I was able to get a free plugin from MetaCreations. Don’t know why it was free, it was offered for about two months.

Use of Unsharp Mask is dictated by what you want to use the image for and what size it will be used at. It’s the last step in preparing files for use.

A recommended work flow for your in camera Jpegs is to save and archive the original. Then Save As an uncompressed file (TIF or PSD) and then do your editing. By editing on an uncompressed format you won’t be loosing detail each time you save. Then resize for your intended use, Save As under a new name, Then add the Unsharp Mask and save under a different name again. The reason for saving without unsharp mask is any publication that requests images always want them with no additional sharpening as they will tweak the files to fit their use. But you will want to add Unsharp Mask for files to be printed. I duplicate the image layer and add Unsharp Mask to the dupe layer. That way I save it both ways in one file.
