I have recently upgraded to CS2 via the download route from the Adobe Store. When I am retouching with the brush tool and alt+click to select a color with the eye dropper, the color picked always shows up as the background color in the foreground/background box. I then have to hit the x key to switch so that I can use the color selected. In CS I never had to do this as the color selected always showed up as foreground color allowing me to work and select new colors quickly and smoothly while working on retouching with my Wacom pen. I have checked the preference boxes and also did a search on this site to see if there is a setting that I have missed. It is annoying when doing detail work and selecting colors to now always having to hit the x key as an additional step to move the color selected from background to foreground in order to use it.

Look at your color palette: from your explanation, it sounds like the background color might be highlighted, rather than the foreground one.

Pierre, You steered me in the right direction. I reset everything in the colors palette and it is now working the way I want it to. Many thanks. Regards….Don Walsh

I had a similar problem in CS, but even after I reset the palette, I still had the problem. I have a workspace saved, so I reset all the palettes and that took care of the problem.

Go figure.
